Picking a Wedding Venue Without Losing Your Mind
The questions to ask, the costs that hide, and why a venue with rooms upstairs saves your sanity — from our events coordinator.
I've coordinated 200+ weddings at Haven Villa. Here's what I'd tell my best friend about picking a venue — including the stuff venues hope you don't ask.
The Questions That Matter
Ask three things before anything else: What's the wet-weather plan? Who runs the day — a coordinator or 'the duty manager'? And what's NOT included that I'll definitely want? The answers predict your whole experience.
The coordinator question matters most. 'A coordinator' means someone owns your day end-to-end. 'The duty manager' means the person also fixing the aircon handles your ceremony.
Where the Costs Hide
Cakeage, corkage, 'ceremony relocation fees', chair upgrades, power for the band, overtime by the hour — the quote that looks cheaper rarely is. Ask for the total invoice on a sample wedding, not the per-head price.

The Rooms-Upstairs Advantage
Venues with accommodation change the wedding maths: no buses at midnight, grandparents can rest between ceremony and reception, and the recovery breakfast next morning is where the best stories get told. Our couples' number one post-wedding comment is always the same — 'nobody had to leave'.
Venue Checklist
- Ask for a real total invoice example — not the per-head rate.
- Meet the actual day-of coordinator, not just the sales person.
- Check the wet-weather plan in person, not on a PDF.
- Venue with rooms > venue + shuttles. Always.
Come walk our ballroom and garden — photos lie politely, spaces don't. Walkthroughs take 40 minutes and include coffee. Bring your hardest questions; I've heard worse.
